The Ataris - Welcome the Night

. 2008-12-27
0 Comment

Much more than the passage of time has occurred in the four years between the release of The Ataris's So Long Astoria and Welcome the Night: Half of the group left while the two existing members (frontman Kristopher Roe and guitarist John Collura) decided to change their sound considerably. Losing much of their previous punk/pop leanings and gaining an atmospheric hue, Welcome the Night is more of a darkly-lit whole than a series of radio-friendly singles. A Killers-esque vocal style weaves in and out of the disc, most notably on the opening two tracks ("Not Capable of Love," "Cardiff-by-the-Sea") while a handful of other numbers ("Secret Handshakes," "And We All Become Like Smoke") ooze with the affectation of Disintegration-era Cure. The group finds their own engaging sound on a handful of tracks; "Whatever Lies Will Help You Rest" and the uncredited track 15 contain a strong sense of emotional theatre, thanks to frontman Roe's soaring vocals. His gothy, clichéd lyrics, however, are nearly cringeworthy to hear ("I will drown inside the anguish of your heart" from "Act V Scene IV"). The Ataris are in many respects still a young band, showing influences on their sleeve a little too clearly while they search for their own identity. Their overt change in sound may disenfranchise the group from some longtime fans, but it will likely engage more new ones with deeper roots than ever before. --Denise Sheppard

Yellow Card - Paper Walls

.

The album title Paper Walls comes from the song of the same name, which begins "Let's burn a hole so we can climb out of these paper walls in this empty house." It's a reference to the barriers that built up between the band members over the years and everyone's desire to tear down the obstacles and heal old scars.

"If you really love each other as much as we do, you want to knock those walls down and get back to the place where you enjoy being with each other and making music together," says Key. "The song is basically saying let’s get back out there and remember why this is important to us, why we love being on stage and why we love making records."

Album opener "The Takedown" starts with a shot – an indelible guitar hook and ferocious drums charge forth as Yellowcard's trademark mix of airtight vocal harmonies, entwined guitar lines and flourishes of violin crackle with energy. "Fighting" brings together the band's many strengths – tight, melodic, propulsive riffs gather steam before launching into an epic, undeniable chorus. And bruised but beautiful lead single "Light Up the Sky" has an even more massive payoff, its refrain won't leave your head in this lifetime, but allows for some ringing dissonance beneath it all.

Tip of the Iceberg/Takin' It Ova!

This is not for the fan who likes their original pop sound, but for the fan who understands where they came from and where their sound started with. Come on guys, they were on Eulogy.

Anyone who is a fan or understands anything about where the sound they love comes from needs to know this album makes complete sense and is perfect in every way possible. NFG's early beginnings started off with touring with Hardcore bands, and with Chad's past history with Shai Hulud and actively working in the hxc scene (producing the newest H20 Album) this just comes natural. They cover Lifetime, and lets face it, without lifetime there would be no Saves the day or NFG. Gorilla biscuits, lifetime, and shelter are just a few bands who helped pioneer the music you love today.

Desire: Piano Tribute to U2

.

From the Artist
U2 is a state of being. A life force. And a stadium-jolting, ass kicking rock n’ roll band. Bono’s towering vocals, The Edge’s cascading guitar-scapes and the rhythm section of Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. brought passion and integrity to a rock world hungry for more than plastic, packaged pop stars. Hyper-creative and forever questing, U2 has led us on an exhilarating voyage of discovery, from post-punk to anthem rock, from American roots music to dance club electronica.

Product Description
The Piano Tribute to U2 is music of majestic simplicity. No digital frills or diamond-naveled MTV babes (sigh). Just the power and emotion of U2, flowing from the keyboard in cool, clean cadences. As these piano covers prove, behind the activist swagger and fashion emergency sunglasses, Bono and company are simply great songwriters. Their hits are a perfect balance of epic and personal and their hooks, once heard, seem to code directly into our rock DNA. The Piano Tribute to U2 is an intimate, instrumental portrait of a band that belongs to the world.

i consider myself a die hard U2 fan and i'm not that excited over this cd. i didn't get it through amazon, i found it at walmart one day and decided to get it.
most of the songs are slowed way down and contain some empty spots. i found this cd nice but a little dull. my suggestion is to buy it if it's a lower price.
there are some good songs though. "still haven't found" is catchy and "sunday bloody sunday" is alright.
If you want a tribute album for U2 i recommend the philharmonic orchestra cd. i was very pleased with that. i also have the guitar tribute and that one is good as well. Those two are definately better than this one.
hope this helped!

1. Sunday Bloody Sunday
2. New Years Day
3. Pride (In The Name Of Love)
4. Where The Streets Have No Name
5. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

"Best album of 2008 there isn't a a single bad track on the country-tinged Break Up the Concrete. Chrissie Hynde is as in-your-face as ever but there's a glint of humor here that I don't remember. Also, the best song I heard all year is on this record: "Love's A Mystery." --Stephen King - Entertainment Weekly

Product Description
Think of this long awaited studio album as if it were the first Pretenders record: musical turf that's defined by attitude, lyrical and melodic mastery, and the unexpected...and Chrissie Hynde's voice as you've always known it. "Break Up The Concrete" is an authentic slice of rock Americana, ranging from blistering punk to the most delicate storytelling as told by the queen of rock royalty herself.

Snow Patrol - A Hundred Million Suns

.

The Snow Patrol we meet on A Hundred Million Suns is a band facing the same dilemma that Coldplay met on 2008’s Viva la Vida; having conquered the world with a rousing, melancholy brand of MOR indie, where now? On the surface, A Hundred Million Suns seems to suggest, nothing especially new: producer Jacknife Lee, who first worked with the band on 2003's Final Straw and went on to work with the likes of U2 and REM returns to the fold; and an opening brace of songs suggest that a successful formula--chiming guitars, gentle builds, and Gary Lightbody's quavering, tremulous vocal--persists. Still, “Take Back The City", a windswept, electronic-tinged rocker, rather does for this band what “Dakota" did for Stereophonics, proving that a spot of sleek, synthetic motorik is not beyond their grasp, and there's a new, bright optimism to Lightbody's lyrics that sets the likes of “The Planets Bend Between Us" in light relief to some of Snow Patrol's earlier work. If you want experiments, though, you'll have to wait until the closing “The Lightning Strike", a 16-minute track in three parts that investigates Phillip Glass-style minimalism and electronic beats with some aptitude. --Louis Pattison

Product Description
SNOW PATROL - A Hundred Million Suns - (Polydor/Fiction/Geffen Records)

The album is preceded by the fantastic single "Take Back The City", which comes with a video shot in East London courtesy of acclaimed video director Alex Courtes (White Stripes "Seven Nation Army").

Gary Lightbody (vocals/guitars) says, ""I'm so proud of this record. Everybody played out of their skin. Garret (Jacknife Lee) continued his progression from maverick genius to one of the best producers in the world. Musically, lyrically and sonically the best record we've made"

The Grammy-nominated band's fifth studio album was recorded throughout the Summer of 2008 in Hansa Studios in Berlin (where Bowie recorded "Low," "Heroes" and "Lodger") and at Grouse Lodge deep in the Irish countryside. Written by Snow Patrol, the album was produced by Garret "Jacknife" Lee (Bloc Party, REM, U2).

Snow Patrol are one of the biggest selling UK bands this decade and A Hundred Million Suns follows up the 2006 Number One, seven-times platinum phenomenon Eyes Open which sold 2.1 million copies in the UK and over 1 million in the US. Eyes Open achieved platinum awards across the world from the US and Canada to Germany, Australia and beyond, selling over 4.5 million copies. Their single "Chasing Cars" has just received its 2 millionth download in the US.

Oasis-Dig Out Your Soul

.

Oasis, one of the most commercially successful rock bands in history, joins Warner Bros (for North America) for the iconic British band's seventh studio album (produced by Dave Sardy), Dig Out Your Soul. The group's first album since 2005's Don't Believe The Truth, Dig Out Your Soul marks a new sound for Oasis. Hailed as the band's best work in a decade, Dig Out Your Soul offers a musical oasis for rock fans everywhere!

O.k., I liked these guys from the start. Liked their music, their attitude, the covers, even the videos when I got to see them (usually don't care about those).
Does that make me a fan? Probably. Would I buy anything they spit out? NO!
This, however, I suggest you get. It's fantastic. Although other fans over here think it doesn't quite reach Definitely Maybe or (What's the story)Morning Glory? I don't agree.
The guys moved on - not in a revolutionary way, but still. I think it's wrong to compare anything to the early masterpieces. This is another time; the band has evolved and brought us this: A new Marvel of their art.

"Someone tell me I'm dreaming, the freaks are rising up through the floor" - the moment I heard that line in Bag It Up, the first song on the album, I was 70% convinced this was for me. The other 30% followed with the next few chords.
Rock at its best.
Of course the typical Oasis melody patterns are strewn all over the place, (as f.e. in The Shock of The Lightning or The Turning) which once again doesn't mean it is a copy of anything they did before. As I said, they evolved.

Noel (vocals, guitar, drums, keys and electronics) wrote six, Liam (vocals) three and Gem (guitar, bass, keys) and Andy Bell (bass, guitar, keys) each penned one song. Zak Starkey plays drums again.

My favorites are the ballad I'm Outta Time and the Mid-Tempo Falling Down, but I also like the stomping Get Off Your High Horse Lady or The Turning and Waiting For The Rapture.
Oh, and did I mention the booklet-art? Love it!

If you ever liked what they did, get this.
If you never bought any of their stuff because you believed others saying Oasis being too close to the Beatles but you liked the Beatles from the days when they made Revolver, get this, stop thinking and just listen (and tell those "others" they don't know what they're talking about - though it's clear the Gallaghers are fans: I'm Outta Time contains an excerpt from a BBC John Lennon interview.)
If ever you're still undecided, get this too. I swear you'll grow into it.

Memory and Humanity-Funeral for a Friend

Funeral for a Friend is back!

Now I know that a lot of people didn't like their FFAF's last cd "Tales Don't Tell Themselves." and this really hurt the band. Many people were seeing that they were going soft and had lost their touch.

This new cd completely revamps them and shall restore your faith in them. The sound is a mix of "Hours" and "Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation." The sound of both those cds without a doubt sounds amazing. Not only this, but they also add bits of what they use to have. Screaming! Finally they did it again. Though its only in a few songs and its kind of hard to hear at first, its back and I couldn't be happier.

Each track has amazing guitar work in it, especially in the chorus. The last song kind of dulls down the rest of the album with a slow piano but then kicks up near the last track. I am willing to go out there and state that this cd probably has some of FFAF's best lyrics as well. "Maybe I Am" really holds true to that. My personal favorite song is "To Die Like Mouchette" because of its addicting chorus.

This cd is a must have for FFAF fans. You will not be dissapointed and you will be delighted to hear that they are back!

Track Listings1. Rules and Games
2. To Die Like Mouchette
3. Kicking and Screaming

P.S. I Love You is a 2007 American drama film directed by Richard LaGravenese. The screenplay by LaGravenese and Steven Rogers is based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Cecelia Ahern.

Plot

Gerry and Holly Kennedy are a happily married couple living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan until he succumbs to a brain tumor. Deeply distraught, Holly withdraws from her family and friends until they descend upon her on her 30th birthday. They are determined to force the young widow to face the future and decide what her next career move should be. As they rally around Holly and help organize her apartment, a cake is delivered, and on it is a message from Gerry. It proves to be the first of several - all ending with the sign-off P.S. I Love You - he arranged to have delivered to her after his death. As the seasons pass, each new message fills her with encouragement and sends her on a new adventure. While Holly's mother Patricia and her best friends Denise and Sharon are concerned Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, they are in fact pushing her into the future. With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly slowly embarks on a journey of rediscovery.

Gerry pre-arranged for Holly, Denise, and Sharon to travel to his homeland of Ireland, and while there they meet William, a singer who strongly reminds Holly of her deceased husband and coincidentally was his childhood friend. During the vacation, Denise announces she's engaged and Sharon reveals she's pregnant, and the news causes Holly to relapse emotionally and once again withdraw into herself.

Holly eventually enrolls in a fashion course and discovers she has a flair for designing women's shoes. A newfound self-confidence allows her to emerge from her solitude and embrace her friends' happiness. She decides to take her mother on a trip to Ireland, where she reunites with William, and as the film ends the audience is left with the suggestion their relationship may progress to a more serious level.

Superbad is a 2007 American comedy film directed by Greg Mottola and starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera. The film was written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who began working on the script when they were both thirteen years old; they completed a draft by the time they were fifteen.[2] The film's main characters have the same given names as Rogen and Goldberg. The film was one of a string of hits by producer Judd Apatow, producer of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Talladega Nights.

It is two weeks before the end of high school. Evan (Michael Cera) and Seth (Jonah Hill) are long-time friends in their senior year of high school, about to leave for different colleges. Their mutual friend, Fogell, (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) has plans to acquire a fake ID, so Seth agrees to buy alcohol for a party his crush, Jules (Emma Stone), is hosting. Evan also offers to buy vodka for his long time crush Becca (Martha MacIsaac).

While purchasing the alcohol Fogell is assaulted by a hooded robber, and the police soon arrive. The two officers, Michaels (Seth Rogen) and Slater (Bill Hader), who appear to be fooled by the fake ID (which has the single name "McLovin" as his identity), offer Fogell a lift to the party. On the way, however, they make numerous stops. The officers display many instances of childish use of police powers, including stealing beers, drinking on the job, unnecessary use of police lights, and improper use of their firearms.

While the police officers are talking to Fogell at the liquor store, Evan and Seth make the assumption that Fogell has been arrested. Seth is suddenly hit by a car, but seems uninjured. To avoid being reported, the driver (Joe Lo Truglio) agrees to take them to a party, where they reason they can steal the alcohol they need. However, the driver is not welcome at the party and is subsequently assaulted by the host, and Seth and Evan are forced to leave, but not before smuggling out alcohol. They happen upon Slater, Michaels, and Fogell in the police car. Officer Slater prepares to arrest the teens but Evan runs off and the two officers chase while the reunited Seth and Fogell make off with the rest of the alcohol. When reunited, Seth and Evan argue, Evan calling Seth selfish. The trio eventually make it to the party.

At the party, a drunken Becca offers sex with Evan in a secluded upstairs room, but Evan declines with the excuse that he is too drunk, and a heavily intoxicated Becca ends up vomiting. A drunken Seth attempts to explain his feelings for Jules, but passes out from the drink and accidentally head-butts her, giving her a black eye. Fogell successfully seduces Nicola (Aviva Farber) and gets her into bed, only to have officers Slater and Michaels break up the party after only a few seconds of sex. The officers reveal to Fogell that they were aware that he was underage all along, and that they played along so as to not reinforce the stereotype that the police are only interested in ruining kids' fun. The officers apologize for interrupting him, and as a favor they pretend to haul him off to jail in front of the entire party to boost his popularity. In return, Fogell signs an affidavit to a concocted story to explain the condition of the wrecked police car which they proceed to have fun destroying. Meanwhile, Seth carries Evan away to safety from the police. At Evan's house Seth and Evan make up after their earlier argument.

The following morning, Evan and Seth run into Becca and Jules at the mall. After an awkward conversation about the mistakes of the previous night, Seth takes Jules to get cover up for her eye, while Evan takes Becca off to look for a replacement comforter for Jules.

The All-American : One-Up "Womanizer"

.

"Womanizer" has undoubtedly been very, very good to Britney Spears. In October 2008, her comeback single skyrocketed from #96 to #1 on the Hot 100 chart, amazingly becoming her first #1 hit since 1999's "Baby One More Time" and reviving a career that was all but over. Finally, with "Womanizer," Britney was doing well.

But you know who can do it better? The All-American Rejects.

This intrepid powerpop combo recently entered the Yahoo! Music/Pepsi Smash studios with just an arsenal of toy instruments and a simple, all-American dream: to one-up Britney and perform "Womanizer" their way. A better way. And they succeeded.

So this is the latest Pepsi Smash Cover Art created for Yahoo!, and it's a totally compulsively watchable, totally viral insta-hit, maybe the most ingenious Cover Art yet. Not only is frontman Tyson Ritter's Ted Bundy-ish gaze at the camera lens even more bone-chillingly memorable than the creepy-crazy glint in Britney's eyes on the infamous evening she shaved her head; not only has AAR created "pirate rock" music using found objects (a cheapo plastic accordion, empty beer bottles) that somehow sounds more sophisticated than the over-Autotuned, over-Protooled pop fashioned by uberproducers in Britney's million-dollar studio; not only are AAR's adlibbed shoutout to K-Fed and sly inclusion of the soundalike Turtles classic "Happy Together" totally inspired...but it's a Cover Art that makes previous awesome entries (like New Found Glory's version of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River" or Bowling For Soup's remake of Fergie's "London Bridge") seem about as staid and serious as, say, Bob Dylan covering Leonard Cohen.

And yes, it is better than Britney.

Harry Potter - The Tales Of Beedle The Bard

.

In December 2007, J.K. Rowling unveiled The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a very special book of five fairy tales illustrated by the bard herself, embellished with silver ornaments and mounted moonstones. Amazon was fortunate to come into possession of one of the original copies, and it was our privilege to share images and reviews of this incredible artifact. Now J.K. Rowling is giving millions of Harry Potter fans worldwide cause for celebration with a new edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, available December 4, 2008.

"The Tales Of Beedle The Bard" is a collection of stories written for young wizards and witches.
1. The Wizard and the Hopping Pot
2. The Fountain of Fair Fortune
3. The Warlock's Hairy Heart
4. Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump
5. The Tale of the Three Brothers

Offering the trademark wit and imagination familiar to Rowling's legions of readers--as well as Aesop's wisdom and the occasional darkness of the Brothers Grimm--each of these five tales reveals a lesson befitting children and parents alike: the strength gained with a trusted friendship, the redemptive power of love, and the true magic that exists in the hearts of all of us. Rowling's new introduction also comments on the personal lessons she has taken from the Tales, noting that the characters in Beedle's collection "take their fates into their own hands, rather than taking a prolonged nap or waiting for someone to return a lost shoe," and "that magic causes as much trouble as it cures."

But the true jewel of this new edition is the enlightening and comprehensive commentary (including extensive footnotes!) by Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, who brings his unique wizard's-eye perspective to the collection. Discovered "among the many papers which Dumbledore left in his will to the Hogwarts Archives," the venerable wizard's ruminations on the Tales allow today's readers to place them in the context of 16th century Muggle society, even allowing that "Beedle was somewhat out of step with his times in preaching a message of brotherly love for Muggles" during the era of witch hunts that would eventually drive the wizarding community into self-imposed exile. In fact, versions of the same stories told in wizarding households would shock many for their uncharitable treatment of their Muggle characters.

Professor Dumbledore also includes fascinating historical backstory, including tidbits such as the history and pursuit of magic wands, a brief comment on the Dark Arts and its practitioners, and the struggles with censorship that eventually led "a certain Beatrix Bloxam" to cleanse the Tales of "much of the darker themes that she found distasteful," forever altering the meaning of the stories for their Muggle audience. Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead."

Both a wise and delightful addition to the Harry Potter canon, this new translation of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is all that fans could hope for and more--and an essential volume for the libraries of Muggles, wizards, and witches, both young and old.

Dubai beach sex man 're-arrested'

.

A British man convicted of having sex on a Dubai beach has been re-arrested as he was about board a flight to the UK, his lawyer has said.

Vince Acors, 34, of Bromley, London, was detained at Dubai Airport and returned to jail.

His lawyer Andrew Crossley said Acors's flight confirmation was allegedly "not in order".

Acors and Michelle Palmer, 36, of Oakham, Rutland, were given suspended jail sentences.

Acors had been due to return on Friday but a delay in the deportation process meant he was unable to board a Heathrow-bound plane and spent the weekend in jail.

Mr Crossley said: "The return of Vince Acors has been delayed yet again and he will not be returning to the UK tomorrow [Tuesday].

"The situation is close to becoming farcical and Vince is severely disappointed.

"After having booked and confirmed his return flight on three separate occasions through the course of the day Vince was re-arrested at Dubai Airport, as his flight confirmation was allegedly not in order.

"He has been returned to jail, his precise return is now unknown."

Palmer and Acors were arrested on the Jumeirah Beach on 5 July, hours after meeting at a champagne brunch.

They were found guilty of unmarried sex and public indecency at Dubai's Court of First Instance in October. Both were fined £170 and sentenced to three months in prison.

They admitted a charge of being drunk in a public place.

What makes a cyber criminal?

.

Cyber crime - internet banking and credit card fraud - is now the fastest growing sector of global organised crime, increasing at a rate of about 40% per year.

With Brazil thought to have by far the largest number of cyber criminals, Misha Glenny, reporting for the BBC World Service's How Crime Took On The World, went to meet some of those trying to profit from the $100bn (£51bn) industry.

Fabio's small frame is hunched over an ancient computer screen in a dingy internet cafe in one of the favelas of Sao Paulo. He is learning the basic skills needed to commit crime online.

Fabio - not his real name - is taking his online lessons from experienced computer hackers. He is disarmingly matter-of-fact about his new career.

"I buy small things - mobile phones, cameras - so that people don't even know I've been using their credit cards," he explains.

Fabio is a low-level frontline operative in a rapidly expanding battle taking place in the virtual world. For the moment, he is unlikely to be caught because he is restricting himself to the regular theft of small amounts of money.

Incessant attacks
Fabio works on the rational principle that only a minority of credit card holders check their statements carefully.

Even if they did, they might think twice before reporting a minor theft to the police. And he also knows it is highly unlikely that the police will have the resources to pursue him.

Nonetheless, Fabio's modest assault on people's bank accounts is the tip of a very large iceberg - and one which is creating a headache for law enforcement agencies around the world.

"The cost of identity theft and computer-based credit card fraud stood at $52.6 billion in 2005," says Peter Allor, boss of The X-Force, the cyber intelligence unit of leading cyber security firm IBM ISS.

Cyber crime's turnover has been growing rapidly ever since, so that now estimates of its value stand at that huge $100 billion figure annually.

But banks and other major companies are reluctant to release any figures about the losses they sustain, for fear of scaring off customers. That is why they continue to reimburse the victims of computer scams with no questions asked.
Serious money

Fabio's descent into the world of cyber crime began recently. He has never had a fixed job which paid well, and struggles to get by - he is divorced and travels two hours by bus to Sao Paulo in order to support his one son.

Poverty and destitution - common in the favelas of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities - have certainly contributed to his determination to make money from cyber crime.

Fabio is one of only a tiny minority of young people in Brazil who use computers to commit crime. But there are concerns that, as thousands more become web literate, there will be an exponential rise in cyber crime.

Access to the web is easy thanks to the cheap internet cafes studded around the suburbs of Brazil's economic hubs - where most young people use them to play games or educate themselves.

Fabio is defensive when I suggest to him that crime on the internet is wrong - however poor he is.

"I'm not trying to rob anyone who wakes up early in the morning and takes the bus, and has to get home and feed his kids, and doesn't have money," he insists.

And he tells me his ultimate aim is to befriend a very rich person online - "someone who owns a limo or a helicopter and who doesn't care about poor people". He is convinced that he will be able to milk his victim for a serious amount of money.

For the moment, however, Fabio is small fry.

Stay clear

Brazil's new federal cyber police force in the capital Brasilia is constantly battling against large-scale scams originating in the country.

Hackers send out millions of spam emails to addresses across the world every day, and a small percentage of computer users are gullible enough to answer them.

Bank account numbers and passwords are then handed over unknowingly to unscrupulous cyber crooks.

There is no way to protect yourself 100% from Fabio and his friends.

But you can minimise the risk. Always keep anti-malware - programmes which prevent the installation of malicious programmes on your system - and anti-virus software up-to-date; never answer an email if its origin is unclear.

And if anybody offers you free sex, stay well clear of that - you could end up with a nasty infection.

Jack's Mannequin - The Glass Passenger

.

First off, I want to make a few things known. I've been listening to this CD for about a month now as I received an advanced copy. The Glass Passenger is probably my least favorite of Andrew McMahon's four prominent CDs (Everything in Transit, North, & Leaving Through the window). That being said, this CD is still amazing. I've listened to the CD it seems about 100 times. It's more mature than his previous efforts and his voice sounds a bit different but it's not neccessarily bad. Some songs, however, take a bit of listening to get into. The primary reason that I can't say that The Glass Passenger is better than his previous albums is because I tend to skip a few tracks when listening which I've never done with the other 3. However, don't expect it to lack in the passion, catchy tunes, and heavy, piano-driven songs that are easy to sing along to from his previous albums. This album will not dissapoint in that aspect. Songwise, some are better than others. One thing that I dislike is some of his choruses on the album are pretty weak.

Overall, go out and buy this album.

The songs:

The Resolution - An amazing, powerful song that you'll be singing before you even finish the song for the first time.

Spinning - This has become my favorite track on the whole record. It reminds me of the old Andrew McMahon and the beat is incredible.

Swim - This is the first track that stood out to me on the first listen. It's emotional and the lyrics are very good.

American Love - Good, catchy song but this is a track similar to what I mentioned previously about having a weak chorus (Big hearts are for breaking?) Of the songs that have weak choruses though, this is my favorite.

What gets you off - I like this song as well but it took awhile. Andrew's voice is noticeably changed on this track.

Crashing - Another song similar to spinning... a throwback to his older stuff. Very catchy and good lyrics. I like this song a lot.

Annie Use Your Telescope - I've heard that a lot of people like this song but I usually skip this track. Musically, this song encompasses a lot of instruments but I'm more into lyrics and this song doesn't do it for me.

Suicide Blonde - Here's another one of the bad chorus songs. Chances are, if the chorus was different, this could be one of the better songs on the album. But it's not.

Drop Out - I really dig this song. Powerful stuff... I feel like this track could have ended the album.

Hammers and Strings - It took a couple listens to really appreciate this song. His voice is again more mature on this track but really this is just a beautful song in the same sense as Konstantine.

Bloodshot - This is another one of the good songs. It's faster-paced and kind of intense but it'll stick in your head for a day after you listen.

Orphans - I skip this track too usually. The chorus is stupid (You're no orphan?) and it feels really out of place. The verses are decent and make the song listen-able though.

Caves - Wow. This song is absolutely incredible. The first time I listened to it, I didn't appreciate it because the first 3 minutes are slow and drawn out but it slowly progresses and you can feel Andrew's heart and soul in this song.

Jack's Mannequin -Everything in Transit

.

Jack's Mannequin, the angst-flavored, SoCal-vibed side project of Something Corporate's singer-song-writer Andrew McMahon, debuted live at SXSW and now debuts on album with Everything in Transit. Produced by Jim Wirt (Incubus, Alien Ant Farm), and featuring Motley Crue's Tommy Lee on drums, Everything in Transit offers yet another stage for the ethereal voice of an iconoclastic performer who is among alt-rock's most popular artists.

Andrew McMahon, the brains behind Something Corporate, has set a new height for following piano rock competitors.

Starting off the album with a nice sing along song, Holiday from Real, that combines curse words at just the right intervals, something I adore because it isn't often that you can hear a song where the cussing doesn't make the song sounds dirty or raunchy. Just a nice song that appeals to the dreamlike quality of a nice holiday on the beach.

The Mixed Tape, the album's first single, isn't my first choice. It sounds too much like Something Corporate, though slightly more dancey. Interesting lyrics that show thought behind them, rather than a nonsense song that no one can relate to. Mixed tapes are making a big comeback in society and I agree with Andrew when he says, "I look at a mixed tape as kind of like the most romantic gesture in the world."

Bruised would have to be one of my favorites, which tells a perfect story of a boy unable to leave someone behind. I enjoy the whole CD which in it's entirety tells a beautiful story I couldn't have said better myself. Adding in metaphorical but easy to understand plotlines, one of Andrew's better pieces. It really has a great beat to it.

I'm Ready is another one of my favorites, though I suppose I'll be saying that throughout this review, considering my biased love of the tunes. A nice song for anyone who's had their heart broken recently as a sort of "get out of bed and do something good for yourself" kind of theme. The speaking at the beginning and end of the song are amazing and couldn't give a better picture into Andrew's life. "My life has become a boring pop song and everyone is singing along." A wonderful line.

La La Lie, an incredible song with upbeat sounds and downbeat lyrics. A sad, soft tune that you can't help but hum along to. I find myself scribbling the lyrics all over my papers at school because it just rolls of the tongue so easily. "The space man that can't get high" makes me think of The Astronaut by Something Corporate and makes the album hit really close to home.

Dark Blue, in my opinion, would have been a better first single for the band to release though many disagree with me. It combines gorgeous piano melodies with appealing and relatable lyrics. The song comes together perfectly at the end when the verse "we were boxing the stars" flows perfectly and I can't help but close my eyes and soak the song in, understanding perfectly what Andrew was thinking when he wrote the song. My favorite I think.

Miss Delaney is a good tune too, with adorable lyrics like "she's the vinyl queen from my surfer dream" and "she's so good but she's no good for me." A nice tune about a girl tempted to cheat as far as I can tell. Still a nice song and easy to dance to.

Kill the Messenger was the second song of Jack's Mannequin I ever listened to, long before the album was released. It's definitely a different side of Andrew, much different from anything Something Corporate ever released. It makes Andrew almost seem god-like, from the lyrics "I'm gonna send a little rain your way." I think it's an interesting comparison to the fan-base that has become increasingly dependent upon him. He has become almost a god-like person.

Rescued is another beautiful song, quiet and calming, a great song to listen to when you're going to sleep. Amazing lyrics which add to the effect of the piano playing. Not really a song that can be described until you listen to it.

MFEO part one and two. An amazing combination of contradicting tones. Starting off with an over-the top orchestra assembly and a tune that strikes me as something that I can't understand, other than a 50's but modern sounding song. Several drug references in the song, as throughout the album, but used in a poetic sense much like the cursing that leaves you with an overall feeling of joy. Ending the song and then going directly into a quiet piano solo of merely a few notes that leaves the listener at a loss of words. The lyrics of you can breathe are amazing in every sense of the word. Indescribable until you can listen to it and hear the song dripping of piano. I love the way Andrew adds in "where are you now?" tying the song back to the Mixed Tape and letting the whole album run together.

Into the Airwaves was a perfect finishing song, with the lyrics "so hang on/ it's going to be a hard day/ don't panic/ there simply is no need," you leave the album feeling refreshed and clean, like taking a shower after a day of working in the mud. It perfectly describes the feeling of everything you come out of the album thinking of.

Overall my favorite album of all times. Wonderfully written, ordered, played and everything else that goes into it.

Jack's Mannequin

Jack's Mannequin is a piano rock band from Orange County, California. A side project of Andrew McMahon, originally from Something Corporate, the band was formed in 2004 and released their first album in August 2005. In June of that year, McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, but made a full recovery. Their album, Everything in Transit, was received with positive response by fans and critics. They are currently signed to Sire Records, and they released a second album on September 30, 2008, entitled The Glass Passenger

Etymology

The band's name is a combination of the title of a song Andrew McMahon wrote, "Dear Jack", and a band name he considered, The Mannequins. He stated that he had grown bored of the "the" band names, so he combined them

Kings of Convenience –Riot on an Empty Street

. 2008-12-20
0 Comment

Product Description
Their second album, 'Riot On An Empty Street' picks up where 'Quiet Is The New Loud' left off. Recorded over the last six months in Bergen, with periodic visits from ex-patriot Erlend - Riot contains more complex arrangements tWith You', 'Know How,' 'Love Is No Big Truth' or first single 'Misread', every track sounds like an old friend coming home to you.

"It's quite style schizophrenic," adds Eirik "We're each inspired by different things so it can be a little confusing, but that seems to be a modern phenomenon, people don't know what genre to put themselves in."

"I'm looking forward to everyone saying it's not as good as the first album," laughs Erlend, "It's funny because two of the songs are from 1998, so it's us, covering us from five years ago," he adds.

The Kings were joined in the studio by hotly tipped Canadian songstress Feist, who appears on two of the albums twelve tracks, the bossa-fuelled 'Know How' where she assists Eirik, and the album's closing track 'The Build Up'- where she duets with Erlend in what is one of the Kings' most stark and beautifully emotive tracks, a rare moment captured in time. Both were big fans of her much-fabled "Red Demos" and she melds perfectly amidst them, bringing an air of added suspense and emotion and of course her majestic voice. "Her voice is amazing", gushes Erlend, "I'm very proud of the 'Build Up', for the first time ever we managed to do something spontaneous, Feist wrote the words an hour before she sung them, and it doesn't sound like anything else we've ever done."

So there you have it. Kings Of Convenience - 2004. A therapist and a superstar singing DJ, an odd couple, but still the best (old) new acoustic band in the world. 'Riot On An Empty Street,' forms their very own republic of two, principality of Eirik and Erlend. A great place to visit again and again.

Kings of Convenience –Versus

.

Given that remixers' recourse to acoustica is the next logical link to down-tempo electronica, it's no surprise that the Kings of Convenience's beguiling debut has undergone this treatment. Versus sees the winsome, lovelorn ditties of Quiet is the New Loud reinterpreted by the likes of fellow Norwegians Royksopp (whose lovely remix of "I Don't Know What to Save You From" appeared on the "Failure" single), Four Tet, Ladytron, and Alfie, among others. Apart from Ladytron, who opt for their characteristic warped synth-pop, on the whole the assembled cast gently tweaks the songs, rather than offering any radical reworking of them. Evil Tordivel update "Leaning Against the Wall" with sprightly horns and keyboards, leaving the song less introspective, but still recognizable. Wayward folksters Alfie remake "Failure" (also included on the single), but are less successful, as their skewed lo-fi tends to overbear much of the all-important melody. Riton's remix of "The Girl from Back Then" adds gentle sprinkles of nonchalant, shuffling beats, but the highlight is the "Weight of My Words" remix by Kieran Hebden, a.k.a. Four Tet. As showcased on his glorious Pause album, he melds bubbling electronica with an organic, folky ambience, perfectly demonstrating the premise of Versus.

Product Description
'Versus' is a remix collection mostly taken from their U.K. single releases and some brand new mixes, including Ladytron, Royksopp, & Andy Votel. This Astralwerks release is available on CD & LP.

1. "I Don't Know What I Can Save You From" (remix by Röyksopp) – 4:13

Kings of Convenience – Quiet Is the New Loud (2001)

.

Although Kings of Convenience are keen to play down any blatantly self-evident similarities to Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, and Belle and Sebastian, the winsome and placidity-favoring Norwegian duo of Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe have probably already got the subway buskers of tomorrow lining up to lend an ear. Studentlike in appearance (one of them has a duffel coat and John Major specs) and unashamed to softly impart such nonrock lyrics as "put the kettle on" and "using The Guardian as a shield to cover my thighs against the rain," the weightless and airy acoustic guitar muse of Quiet Is the New Loud isn't a million miles from Radiohead's "Nice Dream" or Pink Floyd's "If" with a subliminal swish of bossa-nova rhythm. A contentedly purring cello, a plaintive touch of piano, and the muffled sound of a trumpet add necessary sonic depth, and the results are as pleasant and civilized as a little light conversation over tea in the drawing room. But what a shame they chose to name themselves after a lavatory.

Kings of Convenience

Kings of Convenience is an indie folk-pop duo from Bergen, Norway. Consisting of Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe, the musical group is known for their delicate tunes, calming voices, and intricately subtle guitar melodies. Both Øye and Bøe sing in their tracks, and both of them compose.

History
Erlend and Eirik were both born in 1975 (Erlend on November 21 and Eirik on October 25), and have known each other since the age of 10. At sixteen, they played together in the band Skog ("forest") with two other friends, releasing one EP Tom Tids Tale, before breaking up and later forming the Kings duo.

The twosome were signed to the American label Kindercore after appearing in European festivals during the summer of 1999. After a spell living in London in 2001, they released their debut album Quiet Is the New Loud. The album was produced by Coldplay producer Ken Nelson. The album was very successful and even lent its name to a small movement of musicians in the pop underground (including acoustic contemporaries such as Turin Brakes) which took Belle & Sebastian and Simon and Garfunkel as their inspiration and focused on more subtle melodies and messages.

Versus, an album of remixes of tracks from Quiet Is the New Loud, came out shortly after. After this breakthrough year, not much was heard from the band. Øye spent the next few years living in Berlin and doing solo material, releasing music under the DJ Kicks series as well as a solo album titled Unrest. He also has a side project named The Whitest Boy Alive

It was not until 2004 that the Kings' follow-up Riot on an Empty Street was released. The video made for I'd Rather Dance With You, the second single from Riot on an Empty Street, topped MTV's European list as the best music video of 2004. The album also featured contributions by Leslie Feist.

The band had a period of inactivity, which led to speculations that they had stopped working together. But the duo recently played a one-off concert in Mexico City on March 7, 2007. There was also a concert scheduled for March 6, but it had to be cancelled, because Erlend had a problem with "Montezuma's Revenge" and was not feeling well. They played two concerts on March 7 and announced they were going to start work on their new album in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Most recently, in 2008 the band played concerts in the Northern Norwegian cities of Tromsø on January 21, Svolvær on January 25, Bodø on January 27 and Umeå, Sweden on January 29 along with a concert in August in Stockholm.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (soundtrack)

.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the soundtrack to the 2007 film of the same name, based on the book by J. K. Rowling. Nicholas Hooper composed the film's score, following John Williams, who scored the first three films, and Patrick Doyle who did the fourth. Though new to the series, he has worked with director David Yates before. The soundtrack was released 10 July 2007, the day before the film's release.
Hooper incorporated into the new score "Hedwig's Theme", the series' theme originally written by John Williams for the first film and heard in all the subsequent films. In March and April of 2007, Hooper and the London Chamber Orchestra recorded nearly two hours of music at Abbey Road Studios in London. The score, like the film and book, is said to be darker than previous installments in the series. To emphasise this, the two new main themes reflect the sinister new character Dolores Umbridge, and Lord Voldemort's invasion of Harry's mind. A great Japanese Taiko drum was used for a deeper sound in the percussion. Another prominent theme represents the Order of the Phoenix, appropriately named "Flight of the Order of the Phoenix". Hooper created a distinctly atmospheric impression. However, there is some discrepancy whether Hooper has under-played important scenes, such as the "Hall of Prophecy", where he could have made more of the London Chamber Orchestra. Finally, Nicholas Hooper composed an arguably beautiful piece of music called "Loved Ones and Leaving". In this he used three seemingly separate sections: the first is a sad and desolate theme representing the pain of Sirius's death, secondly a rather quirky theme apparently acknowledging Luna Lovegood and lastly, the ending part - a great finish full of lush strings, warm brass, decorated with recurring piccolo, flute and violin ostinati.

Panic! At The Disco declare emo "Bullshit!"

The band reject "weak" stereotype

Panic At The Disco have distanced themselves from Emo calling the genre "bullshit".

Speaking in this week’s issue of NME, singer Brendon Urie explained they found the label insulting, and didn't want to be pigeon-holed as just an emo band.

“It’s ignorant! The stereotype is guys that are weak and have failing relationships write about how sad they are. If you listen to our songs, not one of them has that tone," he declared.

“Emo is bullshit!" added Urie. "If people want to take it for the literal sense of the word, yes we’re an emotional band, we put a lot of thought into what we do. People always try to stereotype us, but we don’t fit the emo stereotype.”

Mischa Barton has reportedly bagged herself a British rock star beau – Luke Pritchard -The Kooks’

According to sources, the 22-year-old actress was spotted on a date with the singer in a small boozer in North London. They were cuddling and kissing on a leather banquette at the Old Queens Head, a traditional pub in Islington, reports the Mirror.

The O.C. star and the singer were at a special Christmas bash for trendy DJ collective Oh, Inverted World . When the Kooks frontman was asked about the ‘special chemistry’, he confided to the source, "It’s early days yet but, yes, we are seeing each other."

"I’m very lucky. She’s beautiful, so I feel lucky she decided to go out with someone like me. It came about because we have lots of friends in common and kept going to the same parties."

007 Quantum Of Solace

. 2008-12-13

Audiences should expect "a very minimalistic Bond" when Quantum of Solace hits cinema screens.

Speaking at the Hollywood Film Festival's awards gala in Beverly Hills, Paul Haggis - one of the movie's writers - was keeping as tight-lipped as 007 himself when it came to dishing out details of what we can expect from the 22nd instalment.

He did, however, say fans won't be disappointed. "I think if you liked Casino Royale it's more of the same but the director Marc Forster put his own stamp on this," he said.

"It's a very minimalistic Bond," he added mysteriously.
Paul admitted that Daniel Craig had really earned his stripes as the new Bond.
"Yes absolutely, its obvious isn't it, he's terrific," he said.
But the award-winning filmmaker admits he hasn't always been a fan of the franchise.
"I loved the early Bonds and then just fell out of watching them in the Roger Moore days. Not that I didn't like Roger Moore, it just became very fantastical. But I jumped at the chance to work on Casino Royale," he said.
As for Paul's favourite Bond Girl, well he's sticking with his last 007 hit: "Eva Green I think, well she did my movie - there you go

Folie à Deux

. 2008-12-12

is the fifth studio album by American pop group Fall Out Boy. The album, which is the follow-up to their 2007 album Infinity on High, is scheduled to be released on December 16, 2008.

Background
On August 25, 2008, Decaydance Records released a mixtape titled Welcome to the New Administration on Pete Wentz's viral campaign, Citizens For Our Betterment. The mixtape contained several snippets of new Fall Out Boy tracks, however none of the tracks were confirmed for Folie à Deux. The mixtape included the tracks "ALPHAdog and OMEGAlomaniac", "Lake Effect Kid", "Catch Me if You Can/Proclamation of Emaciation" (featuring Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes), and "America's Sweethearts". Pete Wentz was also quoted on his blog stating that "all songs that aren't snippets, most likely won't be on the next album including 'Catch Me if You Can/Proclamation of Emaciation'." However, "Catch Me if You Can" was featured on Gym Class Heroes' The Quilt. Wentz stated that Fall Out Boy fell in love with the track, so they remixed it, and re-wrote the chorus. On September 13, 2008, on the band's website, the album cover artwork was revealed, with Luke Chueh credited as the designer claiming the band was great to work with and gave him full creative control. "Folie à Deux" is a French term which translates to "a madness shared by two", referring to the psychotic disorder.

Though the album was originally set for a November 4, 2008 release, Fall Out Boy later announced on October 13, 2008, that the early November was in doubt, citing concerns over the planned election day tie-in, stating:

Six months ago we thought it would be a fun idea to release our album on election day but this is not the election to be cute. We felt as though rather than making a commentary we were only riding the wave of the election. This seemed less and less like what we intended to do and more of a gimmick. It is now in the hands of our label to give us a new release date. It is our intent to get our record out this year and as soon as possible -- as we made sure to have it done in time for its original release.

The band's initial statement was later corrected, stating that album's new release date is scheduled for December 16, 2008.

On the Friends or Enemies website, Fall Out Boy posted a list of the songs which would appear on the album.[8] The "Friends or Enemies" post conflicts earlier reports by MTV News which included songs tentatively titled "Never Believe" and "Does Your Husband Know?".

tracks list
1. "Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes"
2. "I Don't Care"
3. "She's My Winona"
4. "America's Suitehearts"
5. "Headfirst Slide into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet"
